July Adventure – Silverdale

Oh wonderful Silverdale!  For July, we decided to take a ferry ride over to Silverdale for Silverdale Days.  I know, why would we do such a thing?!  Now, after having been there, it seems like a bad idea.  At the time, however, it seemed like a wonderful idea!  (And it was getting to be the last weekend of July and we were desperate!)

In searching for an adventure on the internet, Silverdale Days promised:

a ferry ride – seemed fun

fireworks over the water – great

fair food – Steve was excited

July adventure – here we come!

Now, if you are not from around here, or if you are a WA novice like us, you would not know that Silverdale, as fun as the internet makes it seem, is not very big.  The entire festival spanned the length of about 1/2 a football field.  This included the main stage for entertainment, the “giant” slide, the rides, all the vendors, the water where fireworks would be seen after “dusk” and a lot of very young, very scantily dressed people, smoking a lot of cigarettes.  After a quick walk through the festival, we decided to set up our spot for fireworks.  They were not supposed to start until “dusk” and we were a little ways away from sun down, but we were determined to stick it out to see the promised fireworks!  The feel in the air was not the safest feeling and there were a few times during the night where Jen and I had to use the buddy system and refused to go anywhere alone.  However, despite how out of our element we felt, we ended up having a fabulous time!

To sum it up:

We rode the ferry.  We saw a new city.  The kids thought the water was amazing and throwing rocks in it was even more exciting than the festival going on behind us.  They ran up and down the dock looking at the small motor boats lining it.  Ivy found hundreds of shells for Kiki.  Owen fell in the water and got what he called a “seaweed leg.”  Owen also stepped in a sticker bush and got tons of stickers in his little foot (during all of this, he was wearing Jennifer’s flip flops).   Steve bought the kids a giant bag of kettle corn even though Jen and I had carefully and lovingly packed homemade popcorn and snacks from home.  I got mad at the wasted money spent on the forbidden Kettle corn.   We were getting cold and could have left at any time, but we stayed and waited it out for fireworks like good adventurers should.  Our perfect spot for fireworks ended up being directly behind a building that blocked most of the show.

All in all, after much laughing at where our July adventure had taken us, we considered the night a complete success!
