1st Birthday and 2011!

My blog won't let me post pictures for some reason, but don't worry, when I can post you will see pictures of awesome glasses, feather boas, Grandpas, puppets, cakes (that didn't get eaten), presents, and one happy little one year old.  What a way to end a wonderful year!

2010 was a good year.  We had a visit from my mom, and Mimi (actually two visits from Mimi).  Trips to Iowa, Utah, and Puerto Rico.  We had Ben's wedding, and a new baby niece.  We got a new car, new tile floors, and numerous sweater vests for Evan.  We found bootcamp, lost a few pounds, gained them back, and Iowa won the bowl game.  Things don't get much better than that!!!

Here are the pictures I promised (a week or two later...)

Dear Evan.

Wow.  I didn't think this post would be a hard one.  I figured I would sit down, blog about your special day (on the 31st), post a few pictures and go to bed.  So not true.  As soon as I wrote the title tears started flowing.  Make fun of me if you want.  Silly mom, so sentimental.  Anyway.  My little tiny.  Happy Birthday!!  I cannot believe that you are now one year old!  It really seems like just yesterday when the doctor told me I could take you home and I secretly wished for one more day in the hospital because I had no idea what I was doing.  To be honest, I still don't know what I am doing, but we are figuring it out.  You, me, and dad.  We are figuring it out.  Lucky for us, you are a content little guy.  You curl your little lips in, smile, and take in the world.  You still cannot talk, but you make sure to let us know how you are feeling.  When you LOVE things, you kick your feet.  Really fast.  True kicks of joy.  We see this a lot.  For example, when dad comes home from work - feet kick.  When we get yogurt out of the fridge - feet kick.  Cheese - yep.  You kick your feet when you see your cousins or your grandpas.  Kiki.  Your blankets.  Camel back water bottles. Mac and Cheese from Red Robin.  The animal farm book with animals hiding behind little doors.  Your little white polar bear hand puppet.  Squirrels.  Dogs.  Trees.  You still use your binky and I love to see your little smile hiding behind it.  You have an awesome smile.

On the other hand, when you HATE something, you are getting pretty good at letting us know.  You refuse to do things that you don't want to do.  For example, Vegetables.  Yes, imagine my stress. How on earth am I supposed to be ok with you eating nothing but cheese?!  I guess I can rest assured that you really are my son, however that doesn't make me feel better about your nutrition!

You are crawling all over the house and are into everything.  You are starting to try to stand by yourself, but are still a little unsure of your feet.  I am confident it will come soon enough.

You are saying a few words.  Da Da,  Ma Ma and something that sounds like "E" "I" "E" "I" "O".  I keep encouraging you to say other things, but for the most part our conversations go like this:  Me: "Evan, can you say Jennifer?"  You:  "Da Da."  Me: What about "Kiki?"  You: "Da Da."  Me: "Okay, try Grandma."  You: "Da Da."  Maybe they sound different to you and I just need to listen a little better.

You are my best little friend and I am so lucky to be your mom.  Seriously.  Everyday - lucky.  Thank you for being awesome.  Thank you for being patient with me.  Thank you for giving tight little baby hugs.  Thank you for messing up the kitchen/living room/dining room/bedroom and teaching me to be okay with it.  Thank you for stealing dad's ipod every once in a while and stressing him out.  Thank you for reaching for things that are out of your reach and making little hand gestures to get what you want.  Thank you for laughing when we put a blanket over our heads.  Thank you for helping me get you dressed by pushing your little hand into your shirt and for helping me get you out of your carseat by taking your arms out of the shoulder straps.  I love that.  Thank you for loving music, for falling asleep on your dad, and for loving animals.  Thank you for coloring pictures with pens and for crawling around with a glue stick while I work.  Thank you for loving the remote control, and for climbing into your mini chair all alone.  I couldn't believe that!  Thank you for walking under the table and for always seeming happy to see me when I poke my head under there.

Thank you for being one.  I love you so much and cannot wait to see what the next year brings.  Happy Birthday!!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas with a kid is way more awesome.  Now, be prepared for picture overload.  Afterall, I did, in fact, get a new lens for my favorite canon rebel camera and had to try it out.  Be patient, I am still learning.
Steve captured the first smile of the day.  Steve and I woke up before him and opened up a few gifts from each other.  I got the above mentioned lens and Steve got tickets to the Iowa Hawkeyes bowl game.  (okay, to be absolutely honest, he already knew about the tickets to the game - I had to tell him so he could get work off, but it doesn't seem fair to say, "I got this wonderful lens that is way over-priced and he got an underarmor shirt for flag football.")  So, in my memory, I will say it happened the way it is printed above.  :)

(On a side note, this picture also showcases the new green kitchen perfectly.  It is Martha Stewart, "bay leaf" and I LOVE it.)
Please also note that my mom was a professional Christmas do-er. Everything was perfect. The wrapping, the special Santa paper, the orange at the toe of the perfectly filled stockings, everything. Preparing for my first Christmas as a mom, I still can't figure out how she did everything so magical. Seriously. However, I am definitely aspiring to be like her for the holidays. Please bless that my child can feel Christmas the way that I was able to experience it. I can only hope.

He was so excited to see the tree and the adorable little bear wearing a sweater under it.  He just kept smiling and pointing.

Here is a picture of the bear taken with the new lens.  One with a flash and one without.  The one without the flash is my favorite.  (Jen was right, I totally needed this lens).

He was a natural present opener from the very beginning.  I bought him new blankets and wrapped them up. When he realized it was a blanket, he took it out of the paper, held it up for me to see, and then carried it around the rest of the morning.

I love the tired little face here.

He had seen this little truck in the guest room before Christmas and kept trying to play with it.  I finally hid it in the laundry room so he wouldn't be tortured by it.  When he opened it up, he wouldn't let go of it.  I know he was fearful if he let go, I would take away his wonder-engine again!

With some wooden toys, some toys that made a lot of noise, blankets, books, some trucks, and the token stuffed animal, he seemed like one happy little guy.

On another side note, every holiday that rolls around makes Jen and I wish we could plan some sort of holiday party like they do in the movies.

At Halloween, we wanted to have a "Witches party" and have our closest girl friends over for witches' brew and scary Halloween eyeball stew or something.  The problem was that we don't have enough girl friends to make the party a real bash.  We figured it might seem a little weird with Jen, me, Beth and maybe two other friends from yoga dressed up like witches, sitting around talking.

At Thanksgiving, we wanted to throw an "as seen on TV" type of gala with matching dishes and holiday cheese spreaders.  The problem with this was - have you met my family?  We don't really fit the mold (and we don't have enough matching dishes to seat 4 let alone 17.).  Jen and I managed to wear adorable aprons while cooking and decided that was movie-esq enough.

As Christmas approached, the movie in my head was playing in full force. For pre-Christmas, we wanted holiday parties with sparkly sweaters and eggnog. We wanted holiday music and mistletoe. Except, that I don't really like eggnog and how uncomfortable would I feel under a mistletoe! (I ended up getting to go to a semi-formal holiday party at a friend's house and was able to bust out my dusty heels. I loved every minute of the festive party, but also watched the clock ticking in slow motion - wondering if we had been gone long enough to actually call it a "night out" without Evan. I missed him from the second we walked out the door and was ok to rush home when I heard that he was crying in the background when Steve called his parents to check in.)

For the actual Christmas day scene, I envisioned my little family opening our one specially chosen present on Christmas eve only to find a pair of new jammies. I could see us getting ready for bed and then placing cookies out for Santa before settling in for visions of sugar plums. Turns out, we opened Evan's new jammies in the waiting room of the Asian 1 restaurant we had been to with the families (Bob and Kathi along with my fam) and Steve and I opened our jammies separately. I quickly put mine on as we got home in order to get Evan back to sleep as soon as possible and Steve opened his in the bedroom quietly in order to make sure the krinkling paper didn't wake him up again. We finished wrapping presents while we watched Elf and totally forgot about Santa needing cookies. HOWEVER, after all was said and done - as you can see, Christmas turned out perfectly.

Warm Beach

Last Friday, we met up with the fam and went to see the lights at Warm Beach.  There were hundreds of lights, a free train ride, pony rides, yummy cinnamon crispy things, hot chocolate, fire pits, a dancing snowman that scared Ivy, cold hands, Santa and lots of pictures!  We had a really good time.  If you live in the area, and haven't been - you should go.  If you don't live in the area, and haven't been - I am sad that you can't see this cute little place.  Last year we went in the pouring rain; this year, we were lucky to have no rain or snow!  (both years were equally as fun though!)  Here is a little view through my lens.
Just getting there.  Red little nose already!

Owen, hitching a ride!

Jen and Ivy.

Bob and Kathi

He wouldn't stay in the stroller for too long.  I don't know why... look how toasty it looks!

Jen and her family

This is a view from under one of the trees

I was playing with my amazing zoom lens.

Our cold little family.

This is right before the tears started flowing!

Rob as a llama.  (everyone needs a picture as a llama)

Felix and her friend.  (after telling me about her plan to spoil the student government teacher's plan to cut down trees at her school to put in a basketball court.  Hopefully she can do it.  She was so excited about it.)

Getting off the train.

One tired little guy!  He slept all the way home, all the way inside from the car and stayed asleep for the night.  It is amazing how much being in the cold takes out of you!

Crawling and 10 months.

Yes, Evan is now over 11 months old, but I forgot to post about how, just before Halloween and just shy of his 10 month old birthday, he started crawling!  He is all over the place!  These are my favorite pictures with the bear...

I love him. Steve, that is.

Some things about him bother me.  Some things like, how he wanted to see how the Subaru handled in the snow and decided to punch the gas while turning a corner.  (Luckily, the car is smarter than the driver).  Or how he insists on wrapping up all the excess cords in the house with little ties and when I want to download pictures with a camera cord or unplug something from behind the computer I first have to get annoyed, find the little bundled cord, get mad, find scissors to cut off the bundle thing, angerly shake the cord back to its full length, and then proceed with what I was doing.  OR how he thought it was a good idea to back up all his music on the computer, but not worry about my beloved pictures of Evan.  OR how it takes him 4 hours to clean one small kitchen and one even tinier bathroom.  (just to name a few that are fresh on my mind...)

BUT, when I think of the little things that bother me, I can also see so many things that don't.  I love that he doesn't adjust the seats in the Subaru (other than moving it back to fit his legs) or the side mirrors because he knows that I have them just the way I like them.  I love that he likes things organized, even if it stretches to the cords behind the computer.  I love that he knew I was upset about the picture debacle and purchased a very large external hard drive that very night.  I love that, even though he is asleep, all toasty warm when I come bed, he lets me put my freezing feet on his warm body to warm up.  I love that he always puts on chapstick before he goes to bed and then tries to kiss me goodnight carefully so the chapstick doesn't come off.  I love that he doesn't know what to get me for Christmas and keeps approaching Jen with idea after idea.  I love that he let me dress Evan in an adorable little reindeer sweater for Thanksgiving and that he won the annual turkey weigh in with a whopping 6 pounds this year.  I love that he watches tv and laughs out loud.  I love that he humors me and my weird ways - most of the time.  (just to name a few that are fresh on my mind...)
